In this brief article we aim to just give a basic understanding of knitting needles, their sizing and what you need to look out for. Let me start by introducing you to the five stitch types that I believe are at the very heart of knitting!

Special kits are available that allow circular needles of various lengths and diameters to be made as needed; rigid ends of various diameters may be screwed into strands of various lengths. The two extra stitches add balance to the pattern. Plied yarns may themselves be plied together, producing cabled yarns or multi-stranded yarns. Different combinations of knit and purl stitches, along with more advanced techniques, generate fabrics of considerably variable consistency, from gauzy to very dense, from highly stretchy to relatively stiff, from flat to tightly curled, and so on.
Yarns need not be dyed; or they may be dyed one color, or a great variety of colors. Patterns and motifs are coarser with thicker yarns; thicker yarns produce bold visual effects, whereas thinner yarns are best for refined patterns.
You will have only one new stitch from two. You'll be amazed at how much faster the second, third, and fourth version of the same pattern can be.
