Some yarns are dyed to be either variegated (changing color every few stitches in a random fashion) or self-striping (changing every few rows). Stitch holders, which come in various lengths and are similar to safety pins, knitting counters are small devices that are slipped over the point of the needle and are very convenient for keeping track of rows, especially for larger items like sweaters and afghans. Plied yarns may themselves be plied together, producing cabled yarns or multi-stranded yarns. For example, differently colored leaves and petals of a flower could be knit separately and applied to form the final picture.
When knitting, some knitters enclose their balls in jars to keep them clean and untangled with other yarns; the free yarn passes through a small hole in the jar-lid. Plenty of finished knitting projects never use more than a single colour of yarn, but there are many ways to work in multiple colors.
Exercise is great, yet, doing something for your soul, is just as important. Brainstorm, and figure out which way of teaching would be best for you and your students!
