The basics of knitting
Knitting is no longer only for grandmothers or just any mothers. I wanted to set out some basic knitting instructions as a refresher so here it is.

To achieve the garter stitch, either knit or purl every row. The diameter affects the size of stitches, which affects the gauge of the knitting and the elasticity of the fabric. The thread used in weaving is usually much finer than the yarn used in knitting, which can make the knitted fabric bulkier and have less drape than a woven fabric. The fibers making up a yarn may be continuous filament fibers such as silk and many synthetics, or they may be staples (fibers of an average length, typically a few inches); naturally filament fibers are sometimes cut up into staples before spinning.
