There are many sizes and types of needles - single pointed, double pointed, circular, and cable needles. They'll go quickly, winter scarves are wonderful to wear, and a thick "novelty" style yarn hides any little irregularities in your stitches.
Be sure to try using other available resources, such as local craft and hobby stores. You watch it come to life as you go, and little by little, your knitting becomes reality.
