There are so many different fibers and needles that are used to make those different varieties of cloth pieces such as table cloths, handkerchiefs and etc. A key factor in knitting is stitch definition, corresponding to how well complicated stitch patterns can be seen when made from a given yarn. Before you start with a pattern as a beginner, you should know the basic stitches including the knit stitch and purl stitch.
Different materials have different frictions and grip the yarn differently; slick needles such as metallic needles are useful for swift knitting, whereas rougher needles such as bamboo are less prone to dropping stitches. Yarns are grouped by thickness into six categories: superfine, fine, light, medium, bulky and superbulky; quantitatively, thickness is measured by the number of wraps per inch (WPI).
Most new knitters should start with some of the basic patterns listed above and work on mastering basic stitches. These few basic knitting instructions are the foundation of any project you will ever knit.
