There are different patterns and ways to knit socks, using the machine. The first step is to setup a basket or bonnet which makes the needles move continuously. Push the point of the right knitting needle in between the front of the first and second stitches, pointing the knitting needle to the right to feed the point through the first stitch keeping it under the left needle. This can be obtained with short rows or by increasing/decreasing the number of stitches.

There are many sizes and types of needles - single pointed, double pointed, circular, and cable needles. Smooth, highly spun yarns are best for showing off stitch patterns; at the other extreme, very fuzzy yarns or eyelash yarns have poor stitch definition, and any complicated stitch pattern would be invisible.

You may also want to consider finding a local knitting group or meeting online others who share your hobby. Once you learn the basics of knitting, you will want to continue progressing to more advanced stitches and knitting patterns.
