Knitting may be hand made or machine made. In the knit stitch on the left, the next (red) loop passes through the previous (white) loop from below, whereas in the purl stitch (right), the next stitch enters from above. Other simple textures can be made with nothing but knit and purl stitches, including garter stitch, ribbing, and moss and seed stitches. Smaller items, such as socks and hats, are usually knit in one piece on double-pointed needles or circular needles.
An aluminum counter is helpful in determining gauge, a crochet hook comes in handy for picking up dropped stitches as well as finishing off those loose ends, safety pins that can be useful to help mark rows as well as hold stitches, and of course, yarn and a pattern. Double-pointed knitting needles usually come in sets of four (US size 1, on right) or five (US size 8, on left).
You may also want to consider finding a local knitting group or meeting online others who share your hobby. But, that's the essence of knitting.
